Tasted blind at Farr Vintner’s Left Bank tasting. Wow. Where did this come from? The Meyney ’03 was not one of the better Saint Estephes in its youth, but it is certainly blossoming with age. It has a very bold, lifted bouquet with damson, plum, cedar and pinecone aromas. Moderate definition, perhaps showing a little over-ripeness. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins, the tannins a little aggressive but there is more than enough fruit concentration to back it up. Rigid backbone on the finish with an agreeable degree of freshness. Tasted October 2010.

48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 13% Petit Verdot, 16% Cabernet Franc. 44.88 hl/ha. Harvested 3 to 25 September. Deep, bright colour. Still incredibly youthful. Graphite, blackcurrant and menthol notes. Savoury edge as well. Lots of fruit still, the palate ripe but dry. Fairly punchy tannins so a bit of chew on the finish. Maintains freshness. Still going strong. Remarkable for the vintage. (JL)
Anticipated maturity: 2011-2030
