The 2021 Volnay Clos des Chenes 1er Cru has a tightly wound bouquet that opens with aeration. Brambly red fruit, incense, tomato vine and pressed white flower aromas unfold in the glass. Returning after five minutes, it loses some of its initial delineation. The palate is grainy in texture with moderate depth, quite a good backbone but linear in style, and it is missing some flair on the conservative finish. A no-frills no-thrills Volnay, though it passes muster. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting. [Neal Martin, 01/10/2025]
