The 2023 Condrieu Les Chaillees de L’Enfer unfolds first into pronounced honeysuckle, chamomile, right-ripe apricot and peachy tones. Subtle pastry adds more aromatic complexity. Medium-bodied, fresh and focused, the outstanding 2023 walks off the stage with a long and fragrant finale.

The only one of Vernay’s wines in the (Yapp Brothers) line-up bottled in an Alsatian-style bottle, making me wonder if that’s meant to suggest something about the style of the wine?And perhaps it’s autosuggestion from the bottle shape, but there does seem to be a bit of a petrol note alongside more characteristic aromas of juicy apricot and gardenia. This is very intense and concentrated but is also fresher than many Condrieus. (JRL)
